چکیده

Small for gestational age (SGA) is defined as a birth weight and/or birth length below -2 standard deviation scores (SDS), adjusted for gestational age (Clayton et al., 2007). To determine whether a child is born SGA, accurate knowledge of gestational age, accurate measurements of weight and length at birth, and an appropriate reference population to calculate the standard deviation scores are required. The child can be further subclassified as SGA for weight, SGA for height or SGA for height and weight. SGA only refers to size at birth and does not take fetal growth into account. The term intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is used when the fetus suffers from reduced fetal growth, based on at least 2 subsequent ultrasound measurements. A child born SGA has not necessarily suffered from IUGR, whereas a child with IUGR late in gestation can have a normal size at birth. These different fetal growth patterns are shown in Figure 1.

Metabolic impact of growth hormone treatment in short children born small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND Growth hormone (GH) treatment in short children born small for gestational age (SGA) may result in metabolic changes with potential long-term effects. METHODS 149 short SGA children (mean birth weight 2.0 ± 0.6 kg, age 5.5 ± 1.5 years, height standard deviation score (SDS) -3.1 ± 0.6) were randomised to: low-dose GH therapy (0.033 mg/kg/day) for 2 years; high-dose GH therapy (0.100...

High serum levels of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) during high-dose GH treatment in short children born small for gestational age.

CONTEXT Epidemiological studies have indicated that high serum levels of GH and IGF-I are associated with long-term risks. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to evaluate the changes in serum levels of GH during overnight profiles, IGF-I, and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) in short small for gestational age (SGA) children during GH treatment with two doses. PATIENTS Thirty-six prepube...

Methylphenidate and the Response to Growth Hormone Treatment in Short Children Born Small for Gestational Age

BACKGROUND Growth hormone (GH) treatment has become a frequently applied growth promoting therapy in short children born small for gestational age (SGA). Children born SGA have a higher risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Treatment of ADHD with methylphenidate (MP) has greatly increased in recent years, therefore more children are being treated with GH and MP sim...

Risk factors for diabetes mellitus type 2 and metabolic syndrome are comparable for previously growth hormone-treated young adults born small for gestational age (sga) and untreated short SGA controls.

CONTEXT Low birth weight might increase risk of diabetes mellitus type 2 and metabolic syndrome (MS). GH has insulin-antagonistic properties. Therefore, long-term follow-up of GH-treated children born small for gestational age (SGA) is important. OBJECTIVE AND PATIENTS The objective of the study was to evaluate insulin sensitivity (Si) and disposition index (DI), all components of the MS and ...

تأثیر یک دوره فعالیت بدنی بر مقادیر IGF-I و IGFBP-3 سرمی کودکان مبتلا به کوتاه قدی ایدیوپاتیک

Abstract Background: According to the importance of GH/IGF-I axis and reported effects of physical activity on this axis among healthy children, this study was conducted to determine the effect of a prolonged physical activity program on growth mediators in children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). Materials and methods: fourteen pre-pubertal short stature children were randomly allocated t...
